Neighborhood cookout, tonight!

Join us for our neighborhood association monthly meeting, cookout style!  Just as we did last summer, we are opting for more casual monthly gatherings with high doses of "hang out" time and only small business matters to discuss.

This month's cookout is at 946 Tecumseh Street.  Feel free to bring a dish to share (not required, however!), and bring a lawn chair if you'd like a place to sit.  6:30 p.m.

St. Clair Place resident leads over 700 youth in service to our neighborhood

On Saturday, May 1st, over 700 youth descended on St. Clair Place and the Brookside and Spade Park areas to help clean streets, repair homes, and beautify our neighborhood.  St. Clair Place resident Linda Proffitt and her nonprofit, Global Peace Initiatives, led the effort (and the 6 months of intense planning), and it all paid off.  Linda described the event this way:

"The crews worked tirelessly to clean the streets and alleys across a two square mile area of the city's near east side. They addressed the individualized needs of over forty residents including painting, demolition, built a wheelchair ramp, salvaged a home overwhelmed by clutter, installed 10 vegetable gardens, built a greenhouse, put together a tricycle, landscaped a preschool playground, painted a gymnasium, painted a pool house, painted five shelters and all the benches in a city park, removed a quarter mile of invasive honeysuckle from a city park, planted sunflowers in the yards of residents, provided the whole neighborhood with information to help people access various agency services, provided a hot dog and ice cream party to the care center for women and children and uncovered the historic footprint of the city's first park."

What an accomplishment--thank you Linda and all the 700+ youth for how you have blessed our neighborhood!

Over $50 Million in Improvements Slated for the Near Eastside!

Check out this article in the Indianapolis Star detailing all the various projects for the Near Eastside (many right here in St. Clair Place!).  We've already seen a lot of activity in the neighborhood, but get ready for a lot more!

Heavy Trash pickup

The following was sent to me from our neighborhood liaison, Tonya Beeler, regarding a neighbor's request for clarification on heavy trash:

It seems that heavy trash is picked up for all of St Clair Place (AT THE MOMENT) on the First Wednesday of the Month. Someone had suggested a list of what was acceptable for heavy trash pick up. Please see below for that:

Each Indianapolis household may place a maximum of two (2) items of heavy trash out for collection each month.Place all items on a stable surface and secure or remove loose parts such as doors or trim. For example, remove the doors to a refrigerator or secure them with tape to prevent children or pets from being trapped inside.

Acceptable heavy trash items:

St. Clair Place neighborhood revitalization

Throughout 2009, there were several public input sessions to discuss the future of St. Clair Place and how we would like to see revitalization in our neighborhood. Indy-east Asset Development ("I-AD") and their partners listened closely to what we loved about our neighborhood and how we hoped to improve it. They created a Gameplan that will guide the future of revitalization in our neighborhood.

You can see Gameplan here.

Minutes from the Feb. 8, 2010 SCPNA Meeting

  • Katy Brett (Indy-east Asset Development) answered questions about the St. Clair Place revitalization plan, specifically the improvements that are scheduled to happen in 2010. She assured that the problems that the Arsenal Heights neighborhood has experienced with their infrastructure improvements will not be replicated here.

  • Reba Taylor-Hill (Health & Hospital) answered questions about citations. She encouraged any residents who receive notices from Health & Hospital about alleged violations to call Health & Hospital to discuss the issue as soon as possible (the phone number is listed on the notice that is received in the mail). Oftentimes, problems can be resolved informally.
  • Tonya Beeler (Mayor’s Neighborhood Liaison) reminded people that it is a code violation to not remove snow from the sidewalks.

  • Josh Abel discussed Neighborhood Association officer elections, which will occur next month (if anyone is interested in being considered for a position, please email Josh at abel.josh@gmail.com). He also discussed proposed new bylaws for the neighborhood. There was also a discussion about how to get more resident engagement with the neighborhood association. Linda Proffitt said that she was going to apply for an Imagine grant to provide food for the “1 By Youth” event, and she suggested that we add a section to the grant request about purchasing food for our summer neighborhood association meetings.

  • Linda Proffitt and Emerson Willis discussed the “1 By Youth” event, which will bring 1,000 – 2,000 youth to our neighborhood on May 1st for a community service day. With volunteers from area colleges, they will be conducting a community assessment by going door to door on February 20th and 27th (and possibly on March 6th as well). They will be questioning neighborhood residents, asking whether they have any projects around their home that would be suitable for the youth to do, as well as asking about neighborhood-wide projects. They are also interested in finding nearby organizations that could accommodate a youth project (eg., Rural Health Center). If you have project ideas or questions about “1 By Youth,” please email Emerson at emerson@globalpeaceinitiatives.net).

  • Remember the great cookouts the Neighborhood Association sponsored this summer? We are doing it again this year, but we are going to get started early by throwing a huge block party on May 1st (4:30 to 6:30 pm) to thank all the kids for “1 By Youth.” We’re going to need lots of help throwing this party, so if you’re interested in helping out, email Josh at abel.josh@gmailcom.
  • Jean Casmir Hill (E. 10th UMC) announced that E. 10thSt. United Methodist Church will be having a fundraiser bean supper on March 19th from 5 -7:30 p.m. This is to celebrate 125 years as a congregation and 100 years as a church building!

  • Next meeting: Monday, March 8th at 6:30 p.m. at the E. 10th Street United Methodist Church.
