On Saturday, May 1st, over 700 youth descended on St. Clair Place and the Brookside and Spade Park areas to help clean streets, repair homes, and beautify our neighborhood. St. Clair Place resident Linda Proffitt and her nonprofit, Global Peace Initiatives, led the effort (and the 6 months of intense planning), and it all paid off. Linda described the event this way:
"The crews worked tirelessly to clean the streets and alleys across a two square mile area of the city's near east side. They addressed the individualized needs of over forty residents including painting, demolition, built a wheelchair ramp, salvaged a home overwhelmed by clutter, installed 10 vegetable gardens, built a greenhouse, put together a tricycle, landscaped a preschool playground, painted a gymnasium, painted a pool house, painted five shelters and all the benches in a city park, removed a quarter mile of invasive honeysuckle from a city park, planted sunflowers in the yards of residents, provided the whole neighborhood with information to help people access various agency services, provided a hot dog and ice cream party to the care center for women and children and uncovered the historic footprint of the city's first park."
What an accomplishment--thank you Linda and all the 700+ youth for how you have blessed our neighborhood!
Mission Statement: We value community among our neighbors, historic preservation in our buildings, and social and economic diversity among current and future residents. Our goal is to create a neighborhood where owners take pride in their homes, the streets are safe and walkable, and people of all different backgrounds enjoy living, playing, and working.
